This week’s Gaming A-Z post is going to be a little longer than last week’s as I have played a game, whose title begins with the letter ‘R’. So, without further ado, let’s take a look at the game I’ve chosen!
The game that I have chosen is in fact the first Rockstar game that I’ve played. Yes, I know, I was a little late to the party.Still, this game was incredible, so much so that it convinced me to take a look at other Rockstar titles. What game could have left such an impression? It was none other than Red Dead Redemption.
I’ll be honest, I didn’t initially have a lot of interest in this open world, wild west themed game. It wasn’t until I saw my brother having fun hunting down outlaws, that I considered giving it a go. From the moment John Marston steps into Armadillo, you can tell the developers paid a lot of attention and time in creating a world that felt like the wild west. I’m the sort of gamer that loves story and world building, two things which feature heavily in Red Dead Redemption.
Another element of the game that I loved was John Marston’s morality is truly in your hands. As you can guess from the title of this blog, I enjoy characters that are morally conflicted- heroes that don’t always do the right or good thing and villains that are capable of redemption. In Red Dead Redemption, you are playing a man who was originally in a criminal gang and is now tasked with hunting down his former gang members. It is not just the story, but also your actions within the game that determine John’s honour rank. The fact that your actions shape John’s reputation and place in the world of Red Dead Redemption really appeals to me.
Speaking of the world of Red Dead Redemption, I think this game is a great example of an open world game done right. As you travel through the game, you will stumble across side quests and mini games that do not feel like filler activities but add another layer to this world. You can play poker, hunt down outlaws or help an old man pick flowers for his wife. All these activities make you feel part of the world, rather than just someone travelling through it to reach the next quest marker.
Red Dead Redemption deserves its reputation as one of the best games of the seventh generation. It is one of the best wild west themed games and was one that I loved, long after I finished playing it on my Xbox 360. In fact, I enjoyed it so much that I recently purchased the Game of the Year version for PS3, so I can play it again one day. I think any game that gets you to buy it twice is definitely worth a mention on this blog!
So, that was my pick for the letter ‘R’, but there are a lot of games that I could have talked about. So, I pass the question to you- what game would you have chosen whose title begins with the letter ‘R’? Let me know in the comments below and I’ll talk to you soon!
