Last year I wrote my responses for a New Year’s Resolution Book Tag over on my reading blog, Paper Portals. Well, I decided to make some adjustments to it and make it a gaming themed tag! So, with 2021 just around the corner, let’s take a look at my gaming resolutions for 2021!
1. A developer whose games you’d like to play, that you’ve never played before.
In 2021, I want to play a few more JRPGs especially ones that haven’t been developed/published by Square Enix. A few JRPG series that I want to try out are Ys and The Legend of Heroes, both of which are developed by Nihon Falcom.
2. A game you’d like to play.
Well, this is a pretty open ended topic! One game I would love to play that I haven’t gotten around to playing yet is Ni no Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch Remastered. I’ve heard such great things about this game, which led me to pick up the remastered version for PS4 when it was released, I just never got around to playing it. So, I’m going to make it a goal to play it in 2021!
3. A classic game you’d like to play.
I plan to continue to show my PS4 some love in 2021, so I would love to finally play Shadow of the Colossus. I actually missed out on playing it on PS2 and like with Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, I’ve heard great things about it. It would seem a shame to not give Shadow of the Colossus a try.
4. A game you’d like to re-play.
There are two contenders for this: Kingdom Hearts and Final Fantasy X. I do want to play the Kingdom Hearts series from the beginning, as I want to give Kingdom Hearts III another try but I feel like I need to experience the story completely in order to give it a fair chance. On the other hand, its been a few years since I’ve played Final Fantasy X and I do really want to revisit Spira again.
5. A game you’ve had for ages and want to play.
This could literally apply to most of my games in my backlog! But let’s go with a game that’s been in my PS4 backlog since 2015. I think a six year gap qualifies as ‘ages’, right? I’ve had Divinity: Original Sin since 27th December 2015, when I started to play it… and then got distracted by other games. Like with a lot of the games I’ve already talked about, Divinity: Original Sin has been well received and I feel like I should give it another go.
6. A lengthy game you’d like to play.
OK, for this one I’m going to say a game that on howlongtobeat.com has an average of 40+ hours to complete the main story is a lengthy game. Since this post has been very PS4 focused, let’s change it up with a Switch game. So, which game on the switch takes, on average, more than 40 hours to complete is main story? Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition according to howlongtobeat.com, takes on average fifty and half hours to finish. I missed playing this game when it was first released on the Wii, but I picked the definitive edition when it was released this year. Hopefully, between all of the other lengthy games that I want to play this year, I will have time to finally play Xenoblade Chronicles.
7. A game you want to from a developer whose games you previously played.
This is an easy one. I’ve played a number of the Telltale Games’ title but there are still some that I have yet to try. The most notable one is The Wolf Among Us. I know, its pretty bad of me, especially as I’ve enjoyed reading the Fable graphic novels its based off. So, I’m going to make an effort to play The Wolf Among Us in the new year.
8. A game you got for Christmas and would like to play.
One of my gifts for Christmas, from my parents, was Bioshock: The Collection for PS4. This may shock some of you, but I have never played any of the Bioshock games. Well, thanks to my parents, I will be able to change that in 2021!
9. A series you want to play from start to finish.
I’ve already mentioned my desire to re-play the Kingdom Hearts series from the beginning, however I feel like that maybe an unreasonable goal to try and complete in one year- sort of like saying I was going to finish all of the Assassin’s Creed games in one year… So instead, I want to try and play The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel series. I’ll be honest, I doubt I will be able to complete all the games in one year but I do want to at least start the series in 2021.
10. A series you want to finish that you’ve already started.
I’m going to go with Telltale’s The Walking Dead. I’ve previously played the first two seasons of the series but then I got distracted by other games, while I was waiting for the third installment to be released. I do want to see how Clementine’s story ends and considering these games don’t take too long to complete, I think its a pretty reasonable goal to finish this series off in a year.
11. Any other gaming goals for 2021?
I don’t want to set any ‘I want to beat x number of games’ as I don’t want to rush through any of the games I do play. However, I do want to continue showing my PS4 and PS Vita some love, as in 2020 I rediscovered how much I love both of these consoles. I also want to continue playing on my Switch, as there are a number of titles being released in 2021 that I want to try.
And that is my gaming New Year’s resolutions for 2021! I’ve certainly set some ambitious goals for this coming year, but hopefully these goals will allow me to experience some games I have yet try, as well as revisit some old favourites. What gaming New Year’s resolutions do you want to set for yourself? Let me know in the comments below and I hope you guys all have a Happy New Year!
