Thero’s Recommended Gaming- Tomb Raider (2013).

Today, I’m recommending the game that tells the origin story of one of gaming’s most iconic characters- Tomb Raider (2013).

Like a lot of people playing Plasttaion games in 90’s, little Thero dabbled in the early Tomb Raider. When I say dabbled, I mean I messed around at the Croft mansion in Tomb Raider II and told my younger brother that the butler had a gun in his teapot and was out to get him. As you can tell, little Thero didn’t really grasp what the Tomb Raider series was about and for along time I never really had an interest in teh adventures of Lara Croft. That is until the day I bought Tomb Raider (2013), which was on sale on Amazon…

I’ll be honest, I wasn’t expecting much from the game. I thought I would play it for a few hours, shooting some form of endangered animals whilst somersaulting backwards, and then be done. How wrong was I. Instead, I find myeself guiding Lara through a storm ravaged island, filled with slightly crazy shipwrecked survivors and dangerous wildlife; whilst trying to craft items to help her survive and uncover the secrets of the island. Let’s just say I was hooked.

Now, you’re probably thinking this is all well and goodThero, but why are you recommending Tomb Raider to me? Quite simply, it has one of the best video game characters I have played in a long time, who has been given a terrific origin story. In Tomb Raider (2013), Lara is not the dual pistol wielding treasure hunter that we know; she is a young woman out of university who finds herself way out of her depth when she is found shipwrecked on a strange island. She is not afraid in this game to be afraid, to cry, to say she cannot do something. One moment that sticks in my mind is when someone tells her that she needs to climb this radio mast to signal for help and Lara says that she can’t do it alone, its too high but circumstances means that must go it alone. After many encounters she reaches the radio mast and the scene of her having made it despite all the obstacles feels like a poweful moment to me.

So, if you want a game that shows that strong characters can be vunerable, with an action filled story and a fantatsic location to explore, then I highly recommend that you play Tomb Raider (2013).

Tomb Raider (2013) is available on PC, Playstation 3, Playstation 4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One

  1. I still vividly remember sitting atop that radio tower in your last screenshot and feeling in quite a visceral way just how bloody high up we were and how far away the rest of the world was.

In any case, definitely second your recommendation. I still need to finish the two follow-ups to this game though!
