Thero’s Top Five Video Game Themed Easter Eggs.

Its been awhile since I last did a top five list post and I thought why not do a seasonally appropriate list for today? Since its Easter Sunday, I thought I’d share some of my favourite Easter eggs that I’ve come across in some video games. So, grab your chocolate eggs, sit back and let’s dive in!

Explorer in a Refrigerator, Fallout: New Vegas.

Let’s kick off this post with reference to a less than loved film, from a beloved film series. If you are exploring the world of Fallout: New Vegas, with the Wild Wasteland trait active, then you may stumble on a fridge. If you decide to take a peek inside, you’ll find the remains of an individual and a hat that looks strangely similar to the one worn by Indiana Jones. This whole set up is, in fact, a reference to the time Indie escapes a nuclear blast by hiding in a fridge in the film, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull. Unfortunately, it doesn’t looks like he gets to walk away this time…

Nobody Tosses a Dwarf, Dragon Age: Inquisition.

If you are in the Northern Exalted plains, with Varric in your party, head towards the broken bridge, after unlocking the task to rebuild it. As you approach, Varric will say, ‘Before anyone suggests, no, nobody’s throwing me across.” This is in reference to Gimili’s line in the film, Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring, “Nobody tosses a dwarf!”, as the party escape Moria.

Lady in the Lake, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

In Skyrim, whilst you are wandering around the area near Whiterun, you may stumble across a stretch of water. In the middle of this water, is a skeleton arm holding a sword. This is in reference to the Lady of the Lake from the legend of King Arthur. This isn’t the first reference of the King Arthur legend within The Elder Scrolls series, but its one of the easiest to find and see the reference.

‘They’ll never learn’, The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings.

I didn’t manage to play a lot of The Witcher 2 but I did get to stumble across this great Easter egg. During the prologue of the game, you can find the body of a man in a white robe, who has fallen to his death into a cart full of hay. This is a reference to the Assassin’s Creed series, in which Assassin’s jump off of great heights into bales of hay, as a leap of faith. As an added bonus, Geralt comments that ‘They never learn’ and he also gets a point in assassination. I love it when video games reference over games, which leads me on to one of my favourite Easter eggs…

Mario, Assassin’s Creed 2.

This one doesn’t need much explanation, which proves sometimes the simplest references are the best. In Assassin’s Creed 2, when Ezio meets his uncle for the first time, his uncle introduces himself with the famous line, ‘It’s a-me, Mario!’ This line is a nod to another famous Italian video game character, the Nintendo mascot, Mario.

So, there were some of my favourite video game Easter eggs. Why not share your favourites in the comments below, I would love to see what you guys have found!

Thanks for reading and I’ll talk to you soon!
