A Year of My Life in Games- 1993.

After a temporary hiatus, I am back with another post looking at various games from my past. This week, its 1993 and we’ve finally reached the first game I competed, plus a couple of other honourable mentions…

So, what was the first game I ever completed? It was Street of Rage 2, which is kind of an odd choice for someone who was around six/seven years old when they played it…

The game belonged to a friend of mine and we spent most of the day trying to beat the game. While Sonic the Hedgehog 2 was the first co-op game I played, Streets of Rage 2 showed me that actually working as a team with someone can really pay off. I must admit that there were quite a few game over screens before we finally completed, but it demonstrated that losing wasn’t that bad when you were losing with someone else. For some reason, I have never really picked up another beat-’em-up game, maybe its time for me for a copy and see if I could do better than little Thero!

Now, I did promise you guys two honourable mentions for 1993. The first is a shoot-’em-up game called Jungle Strike, in which you controlled a helicopter team and had to stop some terrorists. In all honesty, I don’t remember a lot about this game, apart from frantically trying to find fuel before crashing. What I do remember is that in our pre-owned copy, some had written in the instruction booklet the password codes for the later levels. That is why instruction booklets were important!

The second honourable mention is none other than the infamous Bubsy in Claws Encounter of the Furred Kind. This was a platformer game filled with bad puns and mascot that desperately wanted to complete with the like of Mario and Sonic. I know I never completed Busby, in fact I don’t think I even got half way through the game. Looking back, it wasn’t a great game but at the time, I played it as much as I did Sonic the Hedgehog.

And those were the games from 1993 that have stuck with me. Are there any games from that year that you recall? Share your memories in the comments below!

  1. Trying to remember what PC games I was playing in 1993… I’m guessing Sim City and Harpoon. That was pretty close to the height of my involvement with the local BBS scene, so I would have been playing a ton of door games. (I was pretty deep into Trade Wars.)

Oops, poking about on Wikipedia, both MOO and CIV were out in 1993. If so, then I was probably playing them too.

    1. I was surprised at some of the games that I have played that were released earlier than I had thought. I wasn’t really playing PC games until later into the 90s, so I never got a chance to play the original Sim City.

      1. I actually originally played Sim City on my C64 in ’88-’89 or so. Thinking/looking back on it, I may not have been playing it in ’93… I skipped Sim City 2000 until I picked it up cheap at a swap meet right before 3000 came out.

It was a long time ago, and a lot of water under the bridge since then… So my memories require a little of poking (I.E. checking Wikipedia).
