Last week, I talked about the first game I ever played; this week we’re focusing on 1992, the second year I was alive. Its kind of fitting that this post is going to talk about a sequels.
I guess I should apologise to the non-Sonic the Hedgehog fans, as this is the second week we’re talking about the blue hedgehog. Rest assured, that this will be the last time in this series of posts! In case you haven’t yet guess, the significant game, for me, released in 1992 was Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 is, perhaps unsurprisingly, the sequel to Sonic the Hedgehog. As far as concept and gameplay are concerned, there was few major changes between the two titles. You play as Sonic who is attempting to stop Dr. Robotnik, in his quest for world domination, by platforming your way through various levels, collecting chaos emeralds and saving cute little creatures.
There was one big difference, for the sequel. You were now accompanied by Tails the fox, who could also be controlled by a second player. Suddenly, for little Thero, gaming wasn’t a solitary activity but one that could be undertaken with someone else, including her sister. OK, I’m not sure whether the actual inclusive of a co-op mode was a great thing for my family, as I suspect it did cause some arguments. Still, suddenly having to work together with another person, definitely helped to teach younger me the importance of teamwork and communication.
I don’t have as many fond memories of Sonic the Hedgehog 2, at least compared to its predecessor, but that doesn’t stop it from holding some importance in my life, especially when it comes to gaming.
So, that was 1992, join me next Thursday, as we continue our journey through my gaming tin the 90s, see you then!
