In this Recommended Gaming post, I’m going to be recommending Armello, a video game that feels like a board game.
The best way I can describe Armello is: Game of Thrones meets Animals of Farthing Wood with board game mechanics. I know it sounds a bit weird but bear with me. In Armello, you play one of the kingdoms heroes, who’s quest is to usurp the king, who has gone mad with a sickness called the rot. Oh and all the characters are animals.
One of the things Armello does well is re-create the feel of a board game. All the mechanics, from the dice combat to the use of cards to buff your hero would feel at place in a board game. There are several ways to win the game, from killing the king in outright combat to more subtle politics to gain the most prestige. You can practice against the AI in single player, before moving onto multiplayer games against over people. Don’t worry, the AI will challenge you. With so many ways to win and the different combinations of equipment and cards, Armello offers plenty of strategy that players aren’t trying to use the same tactics in the every game.
Armello’s gameplay is also support by its gorgeous artwork. The characters and setting are absolutely beautiful and remind me old school Disney. The cards’ artwork is also animated, varying what you see on the screen. The music, also complements the game and helps set the scene for a fantastical quest.
Despite being nearly three years old, the game is still being supported by the developers with frequent updates, so you can fully invest your time in Armello knowing that the game is still supported. With DLC and updates, the game continues to expand, offering you more heroes and cards to play with, so Armello is definitely value for money.
Overall, I would highly recommend Armello, especially to board game fans who want video game that can adapt board game mechanics. If you love hand drawn artstyles, then you will love this game. If you are looking for a game that can be played casually and competitvively, then Armello maybe the game for you.
Armello is available on PC, Xbox One and Playstation 4.
