Thero’s Top Five Snowy Environments in Video Games.

Since it was snowing this morning, I thought it would be a great time to talk about my favourite snowy/icy areas in video games!

I did actually set one rule for this list and that was I could only have one game per series on this list, otherwise there will probably be only two series mentioned. Anyways, without further ado, here’s the list!

5. Noveria, Mass Effect.

At number 5, we have the snowy planet of Noveria from Mass Effect. Noveria is a frozen world, which aside from the Noveria Development Corporation, is not inhabited. Its this hostile environment that Commander Shepard has to navigate in order to stop the Reapers in the first Mass Effect game. The icy atmosphere also matches the cold reception you get from corporation that runs the planet, who seems to be using the the snowy location to cover somethings up…

4. Mt. Silver, Pokemon Gold Silver.

Time for some nostalgia! Mt. Silver in Pokemon Gold/Silver was the first snow/icy environment I encountered in the any of the Pokemon games. Admittedly, there was some frustration with some of the sliding puzzles but it was also immensely satisfying to finally emerge from the mountain as well. Also, I can’t forget that it was the Pokemon I caught on Mt. Silver that allowed me to win the final Johto badge. One of the second generations toughest locations, that will test any trainer in their quest to a Pokemon master.

3.  The North Atlantic, Assassin’s Creed Rogue.

One of the series’ most underappreciated entries, Assassin’s Creed Rogue gives us one of the most beautiful settings in the franchise. Like, Black Flag, a lot of Rogue is spent at sea, but this time in the North Atlantic. Assassins and enemy ships aren’t the only dangers on the ocean, there are storms and icebergs as well. For Shay, the environment is perfect, after revenge is a dish best served cold…

2. Mt. Gagazet, Final Fantasy X.

Trying to choose between all the snowy environments across the Final Fantasy games was actually difficult. So, I choose the one from my favourite of the series, Final Fantasy X. Not only is Mt. Gagazet, the location of several boss battles, it is also the setting for some events integral to the story. The environment, the enemies you encounter and the music, all help to make Mt. Gagazet, an ideal location for the party to struggle through.

1. Skyrim, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim.

Did you think I would forget about Skyrim? Say what you will about the gameplay, but there is no denying that Skyrim’s environments are amazing. The entire northern part of Skyrim has earnt its place as number one of this list.  With frozen seas, snow covered mountains and tundra plains, Skyrim demonstrates that a snowy environment can be just diverse as any other biome.

And that was my list of the five snowy environments in video games. There were plenty of locations for me to chose from, so I know I haven’t included them all here, so let me know your favourite snowy locations, in the comments below.
