Thero’s Recommended Reading: Theft of Swords

This time my recommendation is actually two books in one! Theft of Swords by Michael J.10790290 Sullivan is in fact the first two books of The Riyria Revelations series- The Crown Conspiracy and Avempartha. Set in the fantasy world of Elan, you are introduced to Hadrian, a former mercenary turned thief who is way too trusting and Royce, a former assassin turned thief, who doesn’t trust anyone. Over the course of the first book, they are employed to steal a sword but end up getting embroiled in the struggle for power in the kingdom of Melengar.

The reason why I am recommending this book (and to be honest, the entire series) is that it is an incredibly well thought story with a huge cast of memorable characters. If you like A Song of Ice and Fire but wished it had less graphic violence and sex (and also a completed story), then The Riyria Revelations is a series that you will probably love.

I’ll be honest the next two volumes are much stronger in plot and character development; however Theft of Swords sets a lot of things in motion, a few things briefly mentioned here will return in the later books. And let’s be honest two books for the price of one is not a bad deal.

Recommended for people who loveGame of Thrones/Song of Ice and FireCodex Alera series by Jim Butcher, Gentleman Bastards series by Scott Lynch.

  1. Oh man, I love these books! I still need to read the last pair in the trilogy(?), but I had a blast with Theft of Swords. It’s a great read with all that traditional fantasy novel goodness. I feel like a lot of modern fantasy novels tend too much towards the edgy side – Riyria is good fun and never takes itself too seriously.

    1. I absolutely agree with you and the last book, Heir of Novron, is amazing. I’m currently reading The Crown Tower which is all about how Royce and Hadrian meet. f you like the Riyria Revelations, then the Riyria Chronicles is probably a series you will love as well.
