One of my favourite group of superheroes are the X-Men. I put this down to the fact that I watched the X-Men: The Animated Series as a child, which probably influenced my opinion on comic books. So today I thought I would share my five favourite X-Men team members.
Because the X-Men universe is full of different characters, I am only focusing on characters who have at some point been in the X-men team.
Let’s start off with my one of my all time favourites, Rogue. A mutant with the ability to absorb peoples’ memories, energy- and if you are a mutant, powers, with just a touch. This basically means prolonged physical contact is kind of difficult for Rogue, which sort of makes her powers a real burden, unlike some other superheroes’ powers (I’m looking at you, Spiderman…). Despite her powers and a rocky origin story, Rogue has pretty much been a member of the X-Men since her introduction, which just makes her lack of screen time in the X-Men films even more annoying for me. A strong (quite literally) female character who has managed to feature in almost all forms of media in the X-Men franchise, Rogue is one of my all time favourite superheroes.
Ah, Gambit, a mutant with a special place in my heart. Ever since I saw him on X-Men: The Animated Series, I’ve always the liked this lovable rogue. He as a much darker story arc than most X-Men, including forming the mercenary group, the Marauders and also becoming one of Apocalypses horsemen. But one of the appealing aspects of Gambit, is he is always seeking to atone for his past mistakes. And let’s not forget, his relationship with Rogue. While perhaps not the strongest member of the X-Men team, Gambit makes up for it by outsmarting (and outcharming) his opponents.
Here is a mutant that needs no introduction. And perhaps doesn’t need too much
explanation as to why he is on my list. Wolverine was one of my favourite X-Men characters even before the X-Men films; as like with Rogue and Gambit, I was introduced to him through the animated series. Probably one of the most recognisable Marvel
characters, Wolverine’s gruff character (with a heart of gold, deep down) and incredible combat abilities, earns him a spot on this list.
Next up on this list a a British mutant, Psylocke. And no, her nationality is not the only reason she is here. Her abilities are pretty numerous (even amongst the X-Men) including being able to create telekinetic blade, immune to telepathy and at one point could become invisible to detection equipment like CCTV. She’s also an experienced pilot and martial artist. Like everyone else on this list, Psylocke has had some pretty tough times, including having her soul swapped with an assassin’s soul. Oh, and superheroes runs in her family, as her brother is Captain Britain. How could I not include her after all that?
5.Kitty Pryde (Shadowcat).
And last but by no means least, at number five is Kitty Pryde. One of the youngest mutants to join the X-Men, Kitty has been a major member of the team since the 1980s. Her ability to phase through other objects (and people) has certainly come in handy, as well as being tutored by Wolverine in martial arts. Kitty also bucks the trend on this list, as she doesn’t have a tragic backstory, like the others; that doesn’t mean she hasn’t had her share of storylines, like being part of Excalibur and her future self being sent back in time to avert the extinction of the mutants. Oh, and she also has a dragon like alien called Lockheed, need I say any more?
And there we have it, my top five X-Men team members. The X-Men universe is huge and I’m sure you guys have other mutants on your list, feel free to let us know which are your favourites. Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to binge watch some 90’s cartoons…
